1. General Information about The Catholic University of Korea

The Catholic University of Korea was founded in 1855 under the name 'St. Joseph’s Seminary.' During the decline of the Joseon Dynasty, several Korean scholars traveled to the West to study Catholicism. Father Joseph Ambroise Maistre, under the guidance of the Archdiocese of Seoul, established the seminary to teach philosophy, classical Chinese, and theology with a modern humanistic spirit.

In 1947, the seminary was granted permission to become 'St. Spirit University' and was renamed 'The Catholic University of Korea' in 1959. The university has its own St. Mary’s Hospital, located near the College of Medicine at 224 Banpo-daero, Seocho-gu, Seoul.

III. Korean Language Program at Catholic University

1. Course Information

  • Each class lasts 3 hours 30 minutes, 5 days a week.
  • The program consists of 6 stages and takes at least 1 year and 6 months to complete.
  • There are 4 semesters per year, each lasting 10 weeks.
  • There is a short-term Korean class lasting 2 weeks.
  • Regular TOPIK review classes are held, along with mock tests.
  • Study is strictly managed with the spirit of 'Learn for real'.
  • March – June – September – December: 10 weeks per semester

Stage 1

High school level students with no prior Korean knowledge.

High school level students who have studied about 200 hours of Korean or equivalent.

Stage 3

High school level students who have studied about 400 hours of Korean or equivalent.

  • Communicate confidently on daily topics and personal emotions.
  • Understand and write short paragraphs and simple articles.

Stage 4

High school level students who have studied about 600 hours of Korean or equivalent.

  • Understand and express ideas in fields such as politics, economy, society, and culture.
  • Develop language skills in both formal and informal situations.
  • Read and understand short essays or articles.

Stage 5

High school level students who have studied about 800 hours of Korean or equivalent.

  • Practice language skills necessary for research or professional work.
  • Understand topics related to politics, economy, and culture.
  • Communicate fluently in daily life and discuss various topics.

Stage 6

High school level students who have studied about 1,000 hours of Korean or equivalent.

  • Understand study and professional content without difficulty.
  • Express specialized terms in Korean.
  • Practice Korean fluently, though not at native speaker level.

V. Stefano Dormitory at Catholic University

The Stefano Dormitory is located from the 4th to the 15th floor of the 'Sacred Heart International Campus International Hub' building. The dormitory has 341 rooms for students (1,068 people), 4 rooms for disabled students, and 50 rooms for guests, accommodating up to 1,200 people at the same time.

On the 1st floor, there are facilities for students such as a cafeteria, free reading rooms, media room, gym, indoor stadium, and the 'Global Lounge' where only English is spoken. Additionally, on the 2nd and 3rd floors, there are 50 professor laboratories, 37 English teaching rooms, high-tech language practice rooms, a large multi-level lecture hall, and a seminar room with 300 seats. On the 16th floor, there is a Sky Lounge to relax with a panoramic view of the city.
